About Students for Success

Hello all and welcome to the Colab 400 Phoenix Center project: Phoenix Rising. This interior design endeavor, undertaken by Syracuse University Interior Design Seniors and their professors, Jen Hamilton and Chris McCray, will aim to transform the after school program, the Phoenix Center, housed in the former Hillside school, into an environment that reflects their student’s aspirations, goals and potential. Throughout the spring 2011 semester, our team, Students for Success, will formulate a cohesive design scheme generated from a studio project completed in the fall of 2010. As a team, we will carry the project beyond schematic design, and into build-out. Through a diligent exploration of the potential of good design, we can transform the Phoenix Center into a place that enables achievement in its aspirations and goals.

History and Mission of the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

The Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, located in Syracuse, New York, is an after school program that encourages students to successfully complete their high school education and graduate. This program reaches out to students who exhibit two out of six risk factors:

poor attendance
over-age for grade level
failure in two or more core subjects
multiple school suspensions
low standardized test scores
living in poverty

The Hillside program approaches their goals by teaching 7th to 12th grade students career development and helping them with their homework, as well as providing mentoring and after school extra-curricular activities. Most importantly, Hillside works diligently to instill a sense of motivation, self-confidence and self-pride in their students. Their approach involves around the clock mentors who check-in with the students every morning at the students’ public high school, as well as transport them to and from their high school to the Phoenix Center, and eventually to their individual homes. Hillside is a successful and dedicated organization whose members are not just educational mentors but also act as life coaches and dependable adults these adolescents can turn to for support and stability.

Meeting Minutes 2.23.11

Discussed our different T-Shirt Designs and refined them as a group

Becky’s Shirt:
     ·      Moving the phoenix to the side and have it rise up towards the sun on the shoulder
     ·      Text into the rays

Next on the Agenda:
Figure out how to start the process of screen printing
     ·      The Professors will make the screen for the winning t-shirts
o      Get them all ready to go
     ·      The kids can be part of putting the paint on: not making the screens
o      We could show them the process but just have them do the printing part
     ·      Make the t-shirts here
    o      With Beth from Fashion
    o      In the basement

Have our finalized T-Shirt designs done by Monday
     ·      Jen will check on what we need to have to show Dusty: deliverables
     ·      Have the T-Shirts done for Hillside by Wednesday and give Hillside a week to look them over

We have been invited to the Mary Ann Shaw Center Dinner to celebrate public and community service!!
March 30th: Mary Ann Shaw Center dinner at the Shine Student Center Auditorium
     ·      Make the Table Center Piece: Foldable Brochure
    o      Small table mock ups
     ·      When Wayne gets up to speak he can refer to the center pieces.
     ·      The center piece shouldn’t become a main point but a side project: Use the designs we already  have
o      Possibly make it hold candles or flowers.
o      Chris will figure out how much money we have to make the center pieces
     ·      Alison will come up with some concepts for the center piece for our meeting on Monday

Dividing up the groups:
     ·      Markie and Jen are doing a great job on graphics so they should stay in that group
o      Markie and Jen: Definitely need to get moving on the Entry Foyer. Wayne wants that first
o      Then the college room, library, room partitions and then other designs
     ·      Becky should start thinking about the library in terms of construction documents and flushing it out
o      Sabrina should join Becky in that group
     ·      Alison should start working on the module for rationality.
o      Dan and Alison should do the shop work

New Room Wayne Proposed
     ·      College resource room
o      Practice interviews, college resources, inspirations
     ·      Sarah and Leeanna can start coming up with concepts for that
o      Start thinking about our own design ideas too
     ·      Room needs to have a real heavy presence of “Say Yes”
    o      A senior lounge feel
o      Celebrate making it so far.
Highlight all the colleges that take part in Say Yes
    o      Feels sophisticated and formal
     ·      Set up a time to talk about that with Chris

Chris’s feedback on the brochure
     ·      More of a silhouette of the students: not an obvious representation

Next:
Possibly put something together for the Adobe project competition?
