About Students for Success

Hello all and welcome to the Colab 400 Phoenix Center project: Phoenix Rising. This interior design endeavor, undertaken by Syracuse University Interior Design Seniors and their professors, Jen Hamilton and Chris McCray, will aim to transform the after school program, the Phoenix Center, housed in the former Hillside school, into an environment that reflects their student’s aspirations, goals and potential. Throughout the spring 2011 semester, our team, Students for Success, will formulate a cohesive design scheme generated from a studio project completed in the fall of 2010. As a team, we will carry the project beyond schematic design, and into build-out. Through a diligent exploration of the potential of good design, we can transform the Phoenix Center into a place that enables achievement in its aspirations and goals.

History and Mission of the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection

The Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, located in Syracuse, New York, is an after school program that encourages students to successfully complete their high school education and graduate. This program reaches out to students who exhibit two out of six risk factors:

poor attendance
over-age for grade level
failure in two or more core subjects
multiple school suspensions
low standardized test scores
living in poverty

The Hillside program approaches their goals by teaching 7th to 12th grade students career development and helping them with their homework, as well as providing mentoring and after school extra-curricular activities. Most importantly, Hillside works diligently to instill a sense of motivation, self-confidence and self-pride in their students. Their approach involves around the clock mentors who check-in with the students every morning at the students’ public high school, as well as transport them to and from their high school to the Phoenix Center, and eventually to their individual homes. Hillside is a successful and dedicated organization whose members are not just educational mentors but also act as life coaches and dependable adults these adolescents can turn to for support and stability.

Meeting Minutes 2.23.11

Discussed our different T-Shirt Designs and refined them as a group

Becky’s Shirt:
     ·      Moving the phoenix to the side and have it rise up towards the sun on the shoulder
     ·      Text into the rays

Next on the Agenda:
Figure out how to start the process of screen printing
     ·      The Professors will make the screen for the winning t-shirts
o      Get them all ready to go
     ·      The kids can be part of putting the paint on: not making the screens
o      We could show them the process but just have them do the printing part
     ·      Make the t-shirts here
    o      With Beth from Fashion
    o      In the basement

Have our finalized T-Shirt designs done by Monday
     ·      Jen will check on what we need to have to show Dusty: deliverables
     ·      Have the T-Shirts done for Hillside by Wednesday and give Hillside a week to look them over

We have been invited to the Mary Ann Shaw Center Dinner to celebrate public and community service!!
March 30th: Mary Ann Shaw Center dinner at the Shine Student Center Auditorium
     ·      Make the Table Center Piece: Foldable Brochure
    o      Small table mock ups
     ·      When Wayne gets up to speak he can refer to the center pieces.
     ·      The center piece shouldn’t become a main point but a side project: Use the designs we already  have
o      Possibly make it hold candles or flowers.
o      Chris will figure out how much money we have to make the center pieces
     ·      Alison will come up with some concepts for the center piece for our meeting on Monday

Dividing up the groups:
     ·      Markie and Jen are doing a great job on graphics so they should stay in that group
o      Markie and Jen: Definitely need to get moving on the Entry Foyer. Wayne wants that first
o      Then the college room, library, room partitions and then other designs
     ·      Becky should start thinking about the library in terms of construction documents and flushing it out
o      Sabrina should join Becky in that group
     ·      Alison should start working on the module for rationality.
o      Dan and Alison should do the shop work

New Room Wayne Proposed
     ·      College resource room
o      Practice interviews, college resources, inspirations
     ·      Sarah and Leeanna can start coming up with concepts for that
o      Start thinking about our own design ideas too
     ·      Room needs to have a real heavy presence of “Say Yes”
    o      A senior lounge feel
o      Celebrate making it so far.
Highlight all the colleges that take part in Say Yes
    o      Feels sophisticated and formal
     ·      Set up a time to talk about that with Chris

Chris’s feedback on the brochure
     ·      More of a silhouette of the students: not an obvious representation

Next:
Possibly put something together for the Adobe project competition?

More Brochure Process

This a sample of the brochure we presented last week to Wayne O'Connor at the Hillside, Phoenix School. We plan on using the laser cutter at the Warehouse to cut out the shape of the brochure from recycled material. From there we are going to use a silk screening process to print the perspectives and text on the brochure. This should be a fun project! We plan on teaching some Phoenix School students about the silk screening process. Hopefully they can help us make some of these brochures. It would be a great learning experience for the students and for us as well.

More Mock Ups!

The above pictures are an example of (yet, another) mock up brochure we have designed. This has definitely been a process so far, but a valuable one. I definitely think we're getting there!

Logo

Greetings beautiful people, Markie and I are spending some quality time at the warehouse working on the logo. We were having a hard time with the old logo and getting away from the "serpentine" look. We decided to put together some new ideas. These are pretty rough but we just wanted to get your feedback.

Cheers,
Jen & Marklin

T-Shirt Charrette: Part I

In an effort to raise money for our designs, we held a 1st annual T-Shirt making workshop to highlight and promote future collaborations between Hillside and SU.
Groups of 5 Hillside students worked with 2 SU students to develop a winning graphic that answers the question, "What does Hillside stand for in my life?" The winning design will then be printed at SU's print-lab, giving the Hillside students a unique opportunity to learn the process of silkscreen, and to see their designs realized.

More pic's to come.....

Sunday's Meeting

Hey Everybody!

So last Sunday Students for Success met to extensively work through our ideas as a group. We discussed some more ideas for our module table and Dan and Sabrina continued to explore its potential through different forms, connections, and materials. We also worked on finalizing our pamphlet in order to present it to our professors and Wayne, the director of Hillside. We’re making progress!

Pamphlet Design Process

Hey Everyone!
So the pamphlet is coming along well. We (Becky. Markie, Sara and I) had a productive meeting with Jen this morning and have been working on the pamphlet this afternoon. Here's a shot of the front. Enjoy!

Not doing if for credit, just because he wants to.

Discussed Firm Name:
·      Students helping students
  o      About creative education
·      Ed on Ed
·      Student to Student  S2S student (arrow) student/ success
·      Design on Ed
·      Students designing education

Total Phoenix Rising: Students for Success

Brochure Progress
·      Intro to the story of what we’re doing
·      Using renderings of what we have
·      Design of the model
·      Brochure Design: Pamphlet design
  o      Opens in a sequence
o      The outline of the table shape could be a border/outline
·      Positives
o      The fold, allusion to table shape,
o      The fold allows a story to unfold
·      Possible Issues
o      Production of it: strange format
o      We should probably keep it to a traditional size
11X17 is the best price range
We could possibly use the laser cutter
Print them all 11X17 double sided, stack them all up and then print them on the laser     cutter
Even cut out the notches on the laser cutter
Try and them to fit well on an 11x17 sheet to save paper.
Or even make them larger: like presentation boards
·      Play with scale
·      We’ll need probably 150 to 200 brochures
·      Thinking about responsible materials
  o      printing on craft paper/cereal boxes/reused papers
·      Having students hand write their testimonials into the brochure
o      Having the laser cut out line drawings, photos of the students, and text.
                Scoring
o      Keeping the images simple so that it isn’t expensive
·      Changing our renderings into sketches highlighting the most important ideas
o      Have one person do them so they’re all cohesive
o      Possibly do them on cad
Nice clean drawings on rough material (cereal boxes)
·      Laser cutter seems like the way to go
·      We should do a sample print first
·      Start getting boxes from Hillside
·      Silk screen them instead of printing
o      Phoenix center kids could come and help us
o      Could say produced by phoenix center
                Writing testimonials on them

Plan of action
·      Figure out how it will get cut out: Jen
·      Layout design: Jen
·      Secure the materials: Alison
·      Logos: Markie
·      Jen and Becky and Sabrina will start to experiment with table panels
·      Sarah can turn a rendering into a line drawing and print it on the laser cutter to see what it looks like.

Leave the cereal box exposed
·      Sticky tape Markie’s image on the cover
o      Could mass print on a big sticker
·      Line drawings on the inside

Decided to meet Mondays for quick meetings and Wednesday for longer meetings

Doing a silk screening workshop and writing workshop for testimonials
·      Teaching the phoenix center students screen printing skills.
